The Pilatus – Lucerne’s landmark mountain

The Pilatus - Lucerne’s landmark mountain

Lucerne is located in central Switzerland, surrounded by a beautiful and breathtaking alpine panorama. Most impressive and characteristic for the town is the Pilatus (2132m). If you want to spend a day just surrounded by nature, why not undertake a day trip including a boat trip on the lake, ride the steepest rack rail up to Mount Pilatus and come back by cable car?

The adventure starts with a boat trip from Lucerne to Alpnachstad. I recommend you leave Lucerne in the morning, latest departure is around midday. The boats leave in front of the train station and the ride takes around one hour but this depends on the boat they use. Also have a look at the historical paddle steamer. From Lucerne the ship brings you to Alpnachstad – don’t forget to take your camera with you – you will also pass by the mountain Bügenstock – which is as well worth a visit at another time.

After arriving in Alpnachstad there are only a few footsteps to take to reach the entrance to the steepest rack rail of Europe. The rack rail drives you in 40 min from the lake (436m) to the top of the Pilatus. Alternatively you can walk up and that would take you around 4 ½ hours. Shorter walks are on the other side of the Pilatus on the way down, you find them on this map – Pilatus Lucernce.

Finally you make it to the top of the mountain. There you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama from the Pilatus at 2132m. If you started the tour early enough now will be the right time for a lunch in one of the restaurants – they provide very good quality food.

From the top you can then take the new Aerial Panorama Gondola to Fräkmüntegg (1416m). Here you can discover two more attractions – suitable also for older children. One is a summer bobsleigh track (1350-metre) actually the longest of Switzerland (Children from 2 to 8 years must be accompanied by an adult). And second the Pilatus Rope Park – with some courses approved for children aged eight and older.

From Fräkmüntegg a cable car drives you in 30 minutes to Krienseregg (1026m). This station offers an adventure playground for children. A second aerial cableway takes you to Kriens from where a bus drives you back to Lucerne.

Iv’e done this trip many times and assure you it is a full and wonderful day.
